Memorial for Betty Taylor Swinson ’50
Betty Swinson, 90, of Olney, passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney is in charge of arrangements.
Betty was born on April 10, 1928 in Noble, IL, the daughter of William and Irene (Mitchell) Taylor. She later married Paul Ross Swinson and he preceded her in death on September 11, 2010.
Betty had a dream at a very early age to become a nurse. Thanks to the Weber physicians at the old sanitarium who saw the spark in this young woman and helped her pave the way to her dream. After graduating in Decatur, she would move to Mattoon and then Dundas with her young family, serving her community with love and wonderful nursing skills. She would work at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital and Weber Clinic and was also instrumental in helping Hospice of Southeastern Illinois as the areas first hospice nurse. Her kindness and generosity were felt by each hospice family that she served.
Betty wrote in her bible that she wanted to serve others as long as she lived. She did. Even in her later years she felt God’s calling to help the children stay warm by purchasing used coats and then mending and cleaning them. They would then be distributed through her church, Immanuel United Methodist Church, where she was a member.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Rita Dickerson and husband Rod of Olney; Son, Joe Swinson and wife Lulu of Lawrenceville, IL; Son, Peter Swinson and wife Kim of Catlin, IL; Son, John Swinson; 7 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren, Sister, Mary Lou Wright of Olney; and her special friend, Don Harris.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
