Mary Brewer Cox, Class of 1949

Mary Elizabeth Brewer Cox passed away on February 11, 2023, at age 96 (almost 97!). She was born on February 22, 1926, to two Christian Missionaries who met and married in China and had two children before returning to the United States.  Among her many academic achievements, Mary earned a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Duke University.  Her ultimate goal was to teach so in 1958, Mary came to Emory, Virginia to accept a position as the first female Dean of Women at Emory & Henry College and later became the Head of The Psychology Department. It was in Emory where she met her husband, Jack Cox, who was attending Emory & Henry College on the GI Bill after being discharged from the Army. 
Jack and Mary adopted two children, Judith Lee (Cox) Miller (1966) and Randall Eric Cox (1968). Throughout her lifetime, Mary was an avid and fearless traveler and visited many different countries.  When not traveling, Mary was an active member of her church, Emory United Methodist.  She also volunteered her time and services in support of the local women’s shelter and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.
